Albert Berry was born on 12th December 1896 at Balby, Doncaster, to Frederick Berry and Ellen (née Touge). After leaving school, he was initially employed as a Hair Lad at the Doncaster Locomotive, Carriage and Wagon Works. At the time of his enrolment into the Tyneside Division of the RNVR on 26th March 1915, his occupation was recorded as a trimmer. On 29th March 1915, Albert left the Tyneside headquarters for Crystal Palace, where he entered the 2nd Battalion. On 3rd June, he was drafted to the 2nd Reserve Battalion at Blandford, and his record notes that he was rated Able Seaman on 1st August. He was posted to the Hood Battalion on 20th August, joining the battalion in September. Albert was killed in action on 23rd September 1915. He is buried in Redoubt Cemetery, Helles. |
