Arthur Buckman was born on 30th June 1893. When he entered the Royal Naval Division as an Ordinary Seaman on 3rd May 1915, he was employed as a platelayer and living at Slinfold, Sussex. He entered the 2nd Battalion at Crystal Palace and was promoted to Leading Seaman on 25th May. On 23rd July, he was drafted to the 3rd Reserve Battalion at Blandford and promoted to Petty Officer on 30th September. On 21st October, Arthur was drafted to the Nelson Battalion as a 1st Class Machine Gunner. Following the evacuation of Gallipoli, he was admitted to hospital at Mudros on 20th January 1916 suffering from catarrh. He rejoined Nelson on 25th March following fourteen days’ leave. After disembarking in France on 29th May, he was transferred to the 2nd Brigade Machine Gun Company and subsequently to the 189th Brigade Machine Gun Company. | ||||||||

On 2nd September, Arthur was sent to the 1st Field Ambulance suffering from pyrexia and, five days later, was admitted to the 22nd Casualty Clearing Station with a diagnosis of influenza. He rejoined the 189th Brigade Machine Gun Company from the 2nd Field Ambulance on 11th January 1917. On 7th February, Arthur was admitted to Wimereux General Hospital with wounds initially recorded as a slight gunshot wound to his right hand. The following day, he was invalided to England aboard H.S. Princess Elizabeth, where his injuries were recorded as gunshot wounds to his left tricep, right hand, and left thigh. After recovering from his wounds, Arthur joined the Command Depot on 12th October. He was transferred to the Regimental Depot on 30th October 1918 and was demobilised on 13th January 1919. Arthur married Winifred Pitman in 1921. Their marriage produced no known children. He died in 1977. | ||||||||
