Arthur Ellerker Ross was born on 26th July 1895 in Beverley, Yorkshire. He was the eldest of six children born to Harry Ellerker and Eva Ross. Prior to being granted a temporary RNVR commission as a Sub-Lieutenant on 22nd November 1916, he had served as a Corporal in the 5th Yorkshire Regiment. After receiving training at No. 2 Officer Cadet Battalion, Pembroke College, Cambridge, he was posted to the 3rd Reserve Battalion at Blandford on 20th December. On 8th February 1917, Arthur was drafted to the Anson Battalion, joining his unit on 23rd February. At the end of June, he was granted ten days’ home leave and was appointed Acting Lieutenant on 10th November. In December, he was granted a further fourteen days’ leave. On 21st February 1918, Arthur was detached from the Anson Battalion to England for duty, relinquishing his acting rank of Lieutenant. On 21st March, he was drafted to the 3rd Reserve Battalion at Aldershot and then to the 2nd Reserve Battalion ten days later. On 6th April, he was sent to No. 1 School at Brocton, Staffordshire. Around this time, Arthur made an application for transfer to the Royal Air Force. It would appear that this was declined, as he remained with the Division and, on 2nd September, attended a four-day gas course followed by an eight-day course to qualify as an instructor. On 1st October, he rejoined the Anson Battalion. |
