Charles C. Anderson

Charles Coventry Anderson was born on 1st February 1888 in Glasgow to David Anderson, a textile manufacturer at the Atlantic Mills in Bridgeton, and Margaret Reid (née Brown). He was the second youngest of their five children, his siblings being Arthur (c. 1884), Agnes (c. 1886), Margaret (c. 1887), and David (c. 1890). Charles was educated at Glasgow’s Kelvinside Academy. In 1906, he joined the Clyde Division of the RNVR as a Sub-Lieutenant and attended the tercentenary celebrations at Quebec in 1908 aboard HMS Duncan. That same year, he entered the University of Glasgow whilst also working part-time as an apprentice mechanical engineer. He graduated in April 1912 and subsequently worked as a mechanical engineer. In April 1913, he was promoted to the rank of RNVR Lieutenant. Following the outbreak of war, Charles entered the Blandford camp on 25th August 1914 and served at Antwerp with the Anson Battalion. During the Gallipoli landings, he led the beach party at ‘X’ Beach from HMS Implacable. Charles was killed during the first advance up the Achi Baba Nullah on 8th May 1915. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial. |
