Eustace Mars Aron was born on 2nd November 1885 at Sydney, New South Wales. He was the son of German-born Maurice Aron, a storekeeper and wine merchant, and Minnie (née Simon). After the family moved to England, his mother died in 1900.
After being educated at University College School, London, Eustace was employed in a commercial role in Brazil. He returned to England and entered Jesus College, Cambridge University, where he studied languages at which he excelled. Eustace enlisted with the Royal Naval Division on 23rd November 1914, giving his address as Chelsea and his employment as clerk. On enlistment he was given the rank of Ordinary Seaman and the service number London Z/928. In January 1915 he is recorded as being on the nominal roll of the Public Schools Battalion. After being appointed Able Seaman on 24th April, Eustace landed with Hawke Battalion as part of the May reinforcements on the Gallipoli Peninsula. He was promoted Leading Seaman on 2nd September and appointed Petty Officer the following day. In December he was granted a commission as a Temporary Sub-Lieutenant. In April 1916 Eustace was admitted to the 1st Field Ambulance at Imbros suffering from haemorrhoids, rejoining his battalion two weeks later. After arriving in France in May, he was posted to the 2nd Brigade Machine Company. He was initially reported as missing during the attack at Beaucourt on 13th November, his body was later recovered and he is buried in the Ancre British Cemetery at Beaumont Hamel. |
