James Shaw PLY/436(S)

Many thanks to Gary Shaw for the information relating to his great uncle.

James Shaw was born to Edward and Margaret Ann on 6th September 1895 at Everton, Liverpool. He is believed to be the eldest of the couple’s nine children. James, like his father and his father before him, was a coal carter.

James enlisted on 3rd October 1914 and entered the Plymouth Division with the service number 436(S). After initial training, he entered the Victory RM Brigade on the 22nd November with the rank of Private. He would serve through the Gallipoli campaign and was placed in the 2nd RMLI Battalion when the Division was reorganised on the peninsula.

After moving to France, the Battalion commander’s war diary records that the men were serving at Angres section II on 14th August 1916. It is noted that it was a very quiet day, although there was some rifle grenade and minenwerfer activity. James was wounded on this day and succumbed to his wounds two days later. He is interred at Barlin Communal Cemetery Extension.

James’ mother, Margaret Ann, died in 1924 at the age of 49 and his father, Edward, died in 1927 aged 53. Their headstone carries an inscription for James.
