Matthew Burdon was born on 11th July 1890 at South Shields. He was the eldest child of Daniel Thompson Osborne Burdon and Louisa (née Marshall). His siblings were Dorothy Marshall (1892), Priscilla (1893), William Marshall (born and died 1895), and Josephine Marshall (1902). Daniel died in 1906. When Matthew enlisted with the Tyneside Division of the R.N.V.R. on 7th October 1914 he was employed as a boilermaker. On 9th January 1915 Matthew was on the nominal roll of the Hawke Battalion and was appointed Leading Seaman on 26th March. At Gallipoli he was wounded by a shrapnel bullet on 6th December, sustaining a severe wound to the left side of his face which also caused a fracture. On 29th December he was admitted to the 19th General Hospital at Alexandria. On 2nd January 1916 Matthew was transferred to No. 6 Convalescent Home at Ramleh, before being admitted to the 17th General Hospital at Alexandria eleven days later with a septic thumb. On 31st January he was transferred to the Montazah Convalescent Hospital. In June 1916 Matthew was transferred to the 1st Hood Battalion, returning to Hawke in July when 2nd Hood was disbanded. Following the Battle of the Ancre he was granted two weeks’ home leave. He was promoted to Leading Seaman (Higher Grade) on 18th March 1917. Matthew was killed in the fighting at Gavrelle on 24th April. He is buried in Naval Trench Cemetery. |
