| Robert Foster Brown was born on 23rd January 1895. When he enlisted with the Tyneside Division of the R.N.V.R. on 19th May 1915 he was residing at South Shields and working on the steam tugs. He received his initial training with the 4th Battalion at Crystal Palace before being drafted to the 2nd Reserve Battalion. He was posted to the Drake Battalion on 21st September. | ||||||||

On 30th May 1916 Robert joined the Mudros Base Depot and on 19th September was sent to hospital suffering from influenza. He was discharged to the Drake Battalion two days later. Once in France he was attached to 188th Brigade Headquarters and became batman to Sub-Lieutenant Andrews. On 30th November Robert was sent to hospital with a diagnosis of scabies, rejoining his unit on 5th December, having been attached to 189th Brigade Headquarters two days previously. On 16th February 1917 he was granted ten days’ home leave. In January 1918 he was granted fourteen days’ home leave. On 13th March Robert was admitted to the 16th General Hospital at Le Tréport, having been wounded by a gas shell. On 18th March he was admitted to the 1st Western General Hospital and on 13th May was sent on sick furlough. On 18th May he was awarded his 1st Good Conduct Badge. On 16th September Robert rejoined the Drake Battalion and on 18th February 1919 embarked at Boulogne for return to England. He was demobilised on 20th February at Ripon. Robert died in 1952. |
