Victor H. Bearne BZ/400

Victor Hugh Bearne was born on 22nd January 1896. At the time of his enlistment on 4th December 1914 he was living at Briton Ferry, Glamorgan, and working as a labourer. He entered the R.N.V.R. Bristol Division as an Ordinary Seaman with the service number Z/400. For Victor’s initial training at Crystal Palace he was posted to the 3rd Battalion before being drafted to the 2nd Reserve Battalion at Blandford in April. On 25th June he was promoted to Able Seaman and drafted to the Howe Battalion. Victor joined Howe on 18th July at Gallipoli. On 30th September he was admitted to the New Zealand Stationary Hospital at Port Said with a diagnosis of dysentery. On 9th January 1916 he was admitted to Haslar Hospital with a diagnosis of paratyphoid. He was evacuated to Blandford for convalescence and duty on 28th. Victor was drafted to Drake and joined the battalion on 12th December. On 3rd December 1917 he was awarded his 1st Good Conduct Badge. On 25th March 1918, during the enemy’s Spring Offensive, Victor was recorded as missing. On 13th November it was assumed he had been killed in action. With no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. |
