Wallace M. Annand
| Wallace Moir Annand was born on 23rd August 1887 at South Shields. He was the fourth of six children of Robert Cumming Annand, Managing Director of the Northern Press and Engineering Co., Ltd., and Margaret (née Young). He was educated at South Shields High School and Armstrong College, Newcastle-on-Tyne. At the Durham College of Science he studied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Engineering. In April 1907 Wallace joined the Tyneside Division of the R.N.V.R. as a Midshipman. He was stationed at H.M.S. Satellite on the River Tyne and was promoted to Sub-Lieutenant in October 1909. He took a particular interest in the physical training and signalling efficiency of the unit, devoting considerable time to organising and improving both disciplines aboard the station. In 1913 Wallace was appointed a director of the Northern Press Company. In January 1914 he married Dora Elizabeth Chapman, and in June he was promoted to Lieutenant in the R.N.V.R. It is not entirely clear when he entered the Royal Naval Division; he did not serve at Antwerp, but on 19th November he applied to join the Motor Boat Reserve and, as there were no vacancies, remained with the 3rd Battalion at Crystal Palace. On 5th November Dora gave birth to a son, Richard Wallace. Richard would later serve as a Second Lieutenant with the Durham Light Infantry and would become the first recipient of the Victoria Cross in the British Army during the Second World War. In January 1915 Wallace was appointed Adjutant of the Collingwood Battalion and on 8th May was promoted to Temporary Lieutenant-Commander. Wallace was killed during the fighting at the Third Battle of Krithia. With no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial. |
